What is the main cause of UTI’s in Females?

The most common specific cause is the bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli), which normally lives in the intestinal tract, traveling from the anal area to the urethra. This happens due to:

  1. Sexual activity - can push bacteria toward the urethra

  2. Wiping back to front after using the bathroom

  3. Female anatomy - the close proximity of the urethra to the anus

  4. Poor hygiene practices

  5. Holding urine for long periods

  6. Dehydration

  7. Menopause - changes in hormonal levels can alter the urinary tract's bacterial environment

Other contributing factors include:

  • Pregnancy

  • Use of certain types of birth control, especially diaphragms

  • Previous UTIs

  • Urinary tract abnormalities

  • Weakened immune system

  • Fragrance and perfume
